haney fellowships

The Haney Fellowship, inaugurated in 1998 by William "Bill" Haney, III '80, as a tribute to his father, the esteemed William Haney, Jr., is a testament to their enduring legacy at Portsmouth Abbey. William Haney, Jr. dedicated over two decades of his life to the school, leaving an indelible mark as a chemistry teacher, houseparent and golf coach from 1968 to 1991. This philanthropic initiative, born from creativity and generosity, is aimed at providing Fifth Form students with purpose-driven travel and work experiences during the summer preceding their Sixth-Form year.

Selection for the Haney Fellowship is based on the merit of project proposals, coupled with interviews conducted during the winter of the students' Fifth-Form year.

The esteemed Haney Fellows are chosen by Bill Haney '80 and his mother, Irene, herself an integral part of the Portsmouth community as a longtime houseparent. Their discerning selection process ensures that recipients embody the spirit of academic excellence and dedication to personal growth, carrying forward the legacy of the Haney family's commitment to education and enrichment.

Former Haney Fellows have utilized Haney Fellowship resources to assist with the following service/research areas and sponsor organizations:
